New on Sports Illustrated: Alabama Coach Nick Saban On 'Injustices' in Country: 'It's Time to Love Each Other'
Alabama football coach Nick Saban released a statement addressing the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.
Alabama football coach Nick Saban released a statement on Sunday addressing the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.Countless athletes and coaches across sports have spoken out after Floyd was killed under police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. on Monday. In his statement, Saban said he is "shocked and angered" and called out the injustices faced by many in the country.
"We're at an important moment for our country, and now is the time for us to choose kindness, tolerance, understanding, empathy, and most importantly...it's time to love each other," Saban wrote. "Every life is precious, and we must understand we have so many more things that unite us than divide us."
Saban went on to reference Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks as figures he is "inspired and encouraged" by. Following a quote by Dr. King, Saban concluded by stating the importance of action and respect.
"We are all part of this and we must banish these types of injustices in not just our country, but our world," Saban wrote. "The ultimate future of our nation is in our hands, and like the teams I've been privileged to coach, we must depend on and respect each other no matter our differences. We must come together as a society and treat one another with respect and dignity."
Sports organizations and leagues have released statements on the tragic deaths of Floyd, Taylor and Arbery as protests continue to take place throughout the country. Some athletes, such as the Celtics' Jaylen Brown, have taken part in peaceful protests.

New top story on Hacker News: Am I the longest-serving programmer – 57 years and counting?
17 by genedangelo | 11 comments on Hacker News.
In May of 1963, I started my first full-time job as a computer programmer for Mitchell Engineering Company, a supplier of steel buildings. At Mitchell, I developed programs in Fortran II on an IBM 1620 mostly to improve the efficiency of order processing and fulfillment. Since then, all my jobs for the past 57 years have involved computer programming. I am now a data scientist developing cloud-based big data fraud detection algorithms using machine learning and other advanced analytical technologies. Along the way, I earned a Master’s in Operations Research and a Master’s in Management Science, studied artificial intelligence for 3 years in a Ph.D. program for engineering, and just two years ago I received Graduate Certificates in Big Data Analytics from the schools of business and computer science at a local university (FAU). In addition, I currently hold the designation of Certified Analytics Professional (CAP). At 74, I still have no plans to retire or to stop programming.

New on Sports Illustrated: College Football Hall of Fame Damaged During Atlanta Protests
As protests broke out in Atlanta following the death of George Floyd, damage inflicted upon the College Football Hall of Fame was captured on social media.
Following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers on Monday, demonstrations have broken out across the country. As many marched the streets in Atlanta, protesters broke in windows at the downtown College Football Hall of Fame, according to a
report from Eric Stirgus of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.Before law enforcement arrived on the scene, people were seen looting the building, per Stirgus' report. Several protesters reportedly threw trash cans and other objects through the building's exterior, and some ran inside to take items.
Blayne Alexander, a reporter for NBC News, took video of the damaged building:
The $68 million facility opened in 2014 after relocating from South Bend, Ind.
Floyd's death has sparked many reactions from the sports world. Former NBA player Stephen Jackson led a press conference in Minneapolis on Friday, speaking with raw emotion about a man he affectionately called "my twin."
"I'm here because they're not gonna demean the character of George Floyd, my twin," Jackson said Friday. "A lot of times when police do things that they know that's wrong, the first thing they do is try to cover it up and bring up your background to make it seem like the bull---- that they did was worthy.
"When was murder ever worth it? But if it's a black man it's approved. You can't tell me when that man had his knee on my brother's neck, taking his life away with his hand in his pocket that his smirk on his face didn't say, 'I'm protected.'"
On Friday, Colin Kaepernick pledged to pay for top defense lawyers for people arrested protesting police brutality in the Minneapolis area through his charitable arm, the Know Your Rights Camp.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: NCAA Football Oversight Committee to Recommend Six-Week Preseason Camp
The NCAA's football oversight committee is reportedly going to recommend to the Division I Council that teams have a six-week preseason camp for the 2020 season.
With the NCAA's ban of on-campus training activities
due to be lifted on June 1, the college sports governing body appears to be inching closer to making preparations for the fall sports season. On Thursday, Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported the NCAA's football oversight committee is expected to recommend a six-week preseason camp for the 2020 season. The committee is expected to sort out the particular details within the next week before submitting an official proposal. A submission for final approval to the NCAA Division I Council is expected for mid-June.
On Wednesday, the NCAA extended its recruiting dead period through the end of July. Football already had a dead period on its calendar from June 22 to July 24, though the decision impacts all Division I sports.
“The extension maintains consistent recruiting rules for all sports and allows coaches to focus on the student-athletes who may be returning to campus,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania. “The committee is committed to reviewing the dead period again in late June or early July.”
On Tuesday, college football conference and television networks agreed to postpone the announcement of start times for early-season games. CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports and their affiliated networks typically announce early game times for the Football Bowl Subdivision conferences on June 1.
The college football season is scheduled to begin with a handful of games on Aug. 29, followed by a full slate of games the following week beginning on Thursday, Sept. 3.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Has anybody shipped a web app at scale with 1 DB per account?
23 by bradgessler | 28 comments on Hacker News.
A common way of deploying a web application database at scale is to setup a MySQL or Postgres server, create one table for all customers, and have an account_id or owner_if field and let the application code handle security. This makes it easier to run database migrations and upgrade code per customer all at once. I’m curious if anybody has taken the approach of provisioning one database per account? This means you’d have to run migrations per account and keep track of all the migration versions and statuses somewhere. Additionally, if an application has custom fields or columns, the differences would have to be tracked somehow and name space collisions managed. Has anybody done this? Particularly with Rails? What kinda of tools or processes did you learn when you did it? Would you do it again? What are some interesting trade offs between the two approaches?

Link: https://ift.tt/2zhWXiy Old Reddit Link: https://ift.tt/2XrGeB5 Hi HN, Inspired by this post earlier this week: https://ift.tt/3bPYM37, I thought we could make blog discovery easier by having a place to find interesting, unusual, niche, or really any kind of non-marketing blogs that are posted by the people that write them. There are a ton of interesting blogs on the web, probably more than there were when the web was new, but even though there's more they're a smaller percentage of the total internet and hard to find. Search engines fail to help with this for a lot of reasons. They're both not incentivized to find this kind of non-ad, non-sales content, and there are lots of sophisticated actors trying to game search engines to show their own content. Regular people just writing interesting blogs who don't have an interest in SEO will be lost in that shuffle. HN and Reddit are great for link aggregations, but rely on submissions and upvotes which skew things to more generally popular content. The volume of posts also make it hard to compete (even though I really like HN and find the content interesting). The restriction to only allow posts from the authors of the blogs should help and the writer can interact with the community. The end goal is to generate a wiki on Reddit reminiscent of old 90s 'portal' pages with curated links to interesting content. We have a small initial community from my HN comment on that other post (https://ift.tt/2Xt42EK), but if you write a blog and want to join please do!

New top story on Hacker News: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
34 by winston_smith | 5 comments on Hacker News.
Fortunately this email made it through my spam filter. Looks like they want to take on LinkedIn and are planning to seed it by making existing accounts public unless you opt OUT within the next week: Hey [redacted], I’m excited to announce that we are expanding the reach of your Triplebyte profile. Now, you can use your Triplebyte credentials on and off the platform. Just like LinkedIn, your profile will be publicly accessible with a dedicated URL that you can share anywhere (job applications, LinkedIn, GitHub, etc). When you do well on a Triplebyte assessment, your profile will showcase that achievement (we won’t show your scores publicly). Unlike LinkedIn, we aim to become your digital engineering skills resume — a credential based on actual skills, not pedigree. The new profiles will be launching publicly in 1 week. This is a great opportunity to update your profile with your latest experience and preferences. You can edit your profile privacy settings to not appear in public search engines at any time. Our mission is to build an open, valuable, and skills-based credential for all engineers. We believe that allowing Triplebyte engineers to publicly share their profiles and skills-based credentials will accelerate this mission. Thanks, Ammon Co-founder & CEO, Triplebyte

New on Sports Illustrated: Caylin Newton, Younger Brother of Cam Newton, Commits to Auburn
Newton will walk-on at Auburn, where his brother won a national title and Heisman Trophy, after playing at Howard for the past three seasons.
Caylin Newton, the younger brother of former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, announced Friday he's transferring to the same school where his brother rose to fame.
Newton has spent the last three seasons at Howard, an FCS program, where he quickly found success. He was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year award his freshman season, and as a sophomore was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year. In those two seasons combined, he threw for 5,061 yards with 45 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. Newton also rushed for 1,257 yards and 16 scores.
On Oct. 1, 2019, he announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Twitter. He played in four games in 2019, throwing for 815 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions.
Newton, listed at 6'0" and 195 pounds, will be a walk-on at Auburn and has two years of eligibility left. Auburn currently has three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster, including its returning starter in sophomore Bo Nix.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Loss of College Football Season Would Cause $4 Billion Loss
As collegiate athletic departments have already suffered hundreds of millions of dollars in losses due to the coronavirus, a lot hinges on the 2020 college football season.
As the logistics of how college athletics will resume continue to be worked out, one thing is clear: the loss of the 2020 college football season would be incredibly costly.
According to a
report from ESPN's Mark Schlabach and Paula Lavigne, a canceled college football season would result in a $4 billion loss for college athletic programs across the country. This would add to an already significant toll that the coronavirus pandemic has wrought on college athletics, as programs have lost hundreds of millions so far."If there's no football season, or if football season is interrupted or shortened, there will be a massive fallout," TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati said to ESPN. "There would have to be massive cutbacks. Could the department go on? Sure. It would probably look smaller. There would potentially be fewer sports and much less programming."
Public schools' athletic departments in the Power 5 conferences make about half of their total operating revenue from football, according to ESPN, with about 14% of that coming from ticket sales. Several schools have dropped some of their programs already to help offset some of the costs.
Schools are in the midst of taking every precaution to ensure the doomsday scenario of no college football season can be avoided. The sport's top decision-makers have talked on a weekly basis to go over their options and ensure they're as prepared as possible for if (and when) they receive the eventual go-ahead that practices can resume.
The wheels of progress are slowly churning forward. The NCAA voted to lift the nationwide ban on on-campus activities from June 1 to June 30, meaning players will soon be able to return to campus for voluntary practices. There won't be any coaches at these practices, and they won't be mandatory for players, but the move is an important first step to the sport's eventual return.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Production Lisp in 2020
2 by dhab | 2 comments on Hacker News.
I have gone through initial chapters of "Practical Common Lisp"[1] and "Loving Common Lisp" [2], and have a bit of intuition on lisp, and the power of macros. Haven't done any projects yet, but was also researching on real issues faced by adopting lisp, and ran into articles about abandoning lisp [3], adopting lisp [4],[5]. Could not find anything more recent; but what they mention in these articles - even the ones that are adopting lisp talk about issues like: * poor ecosystem of libraries - few gems, most other half-baked * poor community coordination * Dependency management limitations with quicklisp And some specific red flags like: * poor support for json[6] * poor support for async * have to restart the server every 20 days because of some memory leak [3] * hack to tune GC [5] If you are using lisp in production for non-trivial cases, do these issues still exist? is there a way you can quantify effort is resolving them, and if yes, what is it? and, finally, if you had to re-do your project, would you chose lisp or something else?
