Launch HN: Matrubials (YC S21) Milk-derived therapeutics for infectious diesases
19 by ishishah | 3 comments on Hacker News.
Hi, I'm Ishita, cofounder of Matrubials. We are developing milk-derived therapeutics to address infectious diseases. I have extensive experience in microbiology and infectious diseases in both academia and industry. Taken together, our founding team has ~100 years of combined experience in microbiology and ecology, food science and chemistry. My cofounders have previously founded other health companies with specialized products (eg. Evolve Biosystems and BCD Bioscience). We have been focused on structure-function analysis of mammalian milk and the benefits individual components can bring to human health for about two decades. In recent years, we discovered peptides in milk that have selective antimicrobial activity, meaning that they know who the pathogens are, and essentially go after them fast for elimination while bypassing the "good" bugs, leaving them around to continue their jobs. That was the moment we decided we needed to bring these to the market. One niche in the human body where the imbalance between the good and the bad is really bad, is the human vagina. We've been focusing on specific bacteria that reside in the normal human vagina and those that take over to cause disease. In particular, we hope to reduce the burden of bacterial vaginosis, which remains unresolved with current antibiotics. This is especially important because these infections tend to recur, and can lead to secondary infections and reproductive issues. Antibiotic discovery is hard, technically and financially. To develop candidate molecules from early stage research to clinically viable products, with efficacy and safety that do better than current standard-of-care, is a major challenge. An opportunity like this one doesn't come around often so we're pretty excited about it. Converting milk components into therapeutics- now isn't that a great hack? We think so! Happy to hear your thoughts and answer questions!

New on Sports Illustrated: Steve Spurrier on Texas Moving to SEC: 'They Can’t Win the Big 12 Anyway'

The Head Ball Coach got in a jab at the Longhorns, but he said he understands why they'd make the jump.

Few people in college football are more synonymous with the SEC than Steve Spurrier. On Wednesday, the former Florida Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback turned Gators and South Carolina head coach addressed the possibility of Texas and Oklahoma joining the conference.

When asked by reporters about the Longhorns' potential move,

Spurrier said, “I can understand Texas jumping over. They get to play Texas A&M again. They get to, they can’t win the Big 12 anyway. I think they’ve only won two in the last 30 years or so. So I can see Texas jumping over — more money, playing A&M, this, that and the other."

Spurrier was slightly exaggerating, as the Longhorns won the first Big 12 conference championship game in 1996 and later took home the conference title in 2005 and 2009. But in recent years, Texas hasn't had as much success. The Longhorns have only finished the season in the AP top-25 four times since their BCS championship loss in 2009.

Spurrier also addressed Oklahoma's possible move to the SEC.

“They are the champion of the Big 12. I mean, they win it almost every year. They’ve won what, 4, 5 in a row, something like that?” Spurrier said. “I just don’t think they are going to come over to the SEC and win with any regularity the way they win the Big 12. Their fans, they may say, ‘Yeah, now we can beat Alabama and LSU and all these dudes.’ It may not happen like that.”

“It’s obviously more money. I feel sad for the other (Big 12) schools – Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State and all those guys. They obviously need those two schools there. But, looks like it’s gonna happen. Maybe it will work out for the best.”

On Thursday afternoon, the SEC will vote on whether to accept both Texas and Oklahoma into the conference. On Tuesday, the two schools sent formal applications to the SEC, having previously announced their intention their Big 12 grants of media rights when they expire in 2025.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Texas, Oklahoma Look to Leave Big 12, Join SEC

The two largest programs in the Big 12 are reportedly seeking greener pastures.

Texas and Oklahoma have reached out to the SEC regarding a potential conference move, according to the Houston Chronicle's

Brent Zwerneman.

The addition of the Big 12 powers would give the SEC 16 schools, creating the nation's first "super-conference," per Zwerneman. Texas and Oklahoma's induction into the SEC will be dependent on a "majority vote," per the Austin American-Statesman's Kirk Bohls.

Wednesday's report doesn't mark the first potential rumblings of an exodus from the Big 12. Texas and Oklahoma both nearly left the conference after the 2010 season, but the pair of programs stayed put as Missouri and Texas A&M left for the SEC. Texas A&M president Ross Bjork said Wednesday he hopes the Aggies remain "the only SEC team from the state of Texas," per Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey declined to comment on Wednesday's report. Neither Texas nor Oklahoma officials commented on the matter.

The Big 12's current TV contract with ESPN and FOX expires in 2025. Texas's television station, the Longhorn Network, has a contract that runs with ESPN through 2031.

New on Sports Illustrated: Bobby Bowden 'at Peace' After Terminal Condition Diagnosis

Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has been diagnosed with a terminal medical condition, he announced Wednesday.

Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has been diagnosed with a terminal medical condition, he and his family announced in a

statement to the Tallahassee Democrat on Wednesday.

"I've always tried to serve God's purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come," Bowden said in the statement. "My wife Ann and our family have been life's greatest blessing. I am at peace."

Bowden, 91, retired from coaching in 2009 after 44 seasons, which included six years at West Virginia and 34 at Florida State. He led FSU to two national titles in 1993 and 1999 and an NCAA-record 36-year bowl streak. The NCAA credits him with a 357-124-4 career record, making him the second-winningest coach in Division I-A history behind Penn State's Joe Paterno.

In October, he dealt with a "tough" bout of COVID-19, which saw him be hospitalized. He also was hospitalized for a few days in June and has been under "supervised care" at his Florida home since then.

New on Sports Illustrated: SEC Will Not Reschedule Games Due to COVID-19 Outbreaks in 2021

Only six of the 14 teams in the SEC are 80% vaccinated or better, and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said "That number needs to grow."

On the first day of

SEC Media Days on Monday, commissioner Greg Sankey made it clear that teams need to get their players vaccinated. If they don't, it could cost them a win.

Sankey announced that unlike last season, games will no longer be rescheduled in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak on a team before a scheduled game. Sankey didn't commit to any specifics, but this could mean a team with an outbreak may be forced to forfeit or the game will just be declared a no-contest.

This comes less than a week after Big 12 Media Days kicked off their availability with the message that vaccinations need to be increased— and will likely be shared among the rest of the Power Five conferences.

As it stands, six of the 14 football teams in the SEC have reached the 80% vaccinated threshold or better. Teams that are 85% vaccinated are not required to test regularly or wear masks inside school facilities.

"That number needs to grow and needs to grow rapidly," Sankey said.

"They've [vaccines] proven to be highly effective and when people are fully vaccinated we all have the ability to...maximize are chances of returning to a normal college football experience, and a normal life."

The first SEC game of the 2021 season will be when Tennessee faces Bowling Green on Sept. 2 in just over six weeks.
