New on Sports Illustrated: Forde-Yard Dash: Will These 10 Coordinator Changes Work Out?

Examining the outlook for several key personnel moves in 2021, starting with the reigning national champs.

Forty names, games, teams and minutiae making news in college football (Big 12 remnants sold separately in Dallas liquidation; everything must go):

MORE DASH:

Coaching Tests

SECOND QUARTER: HOW GOOD IS YOUR NEW COORDINATOR?

Change is constant in college football, and coordinator changes have become much-scrutinized, big-dollar transactions. Some schools are trying to replace star coordinators who moved on to head-coaching jobs or higher-profile opportunities, while others are trying to correct mistakes. The Dash looks at 10 schools that made at least one big coordinator change, and how those might turn out:

Alabama (11). Key staff turnover: offensive coordinator. Who’s in: Bill O’Brien, former NFL and college head coach. Who’s out: Steve Sarkisian, now the head coach at Texas. O’Brien is the latest to enter the Saban Rehabilitation Center For Fired Head Coaches. At age 51 and having led both Penn State and the Houston Texans, he is one of the most experienced residents. O’Brien might not call games as aggressively as predecessors Sarkisian and Mike Locksley, but that probably would have more to do with the youth of his offense and the potential for this to be a Bama team led by defense. But if quarterback Bryce Young and his teammates show they’re capable, that could change quickly.

Outlook: Saban has had precious few coordinator misfires, and there’s no reason to believe this one will go poorly.

Notre Dame (12). Key staff turnover: defensive coordinator. Who’s in: Marcus Freeman, former DC at Cincinnati. Who’s out: Clark Lea, now the head coach at Vanderbilt. Brian Kelly lost one under-40 coaching star and replaced him with another. Under Lea, the Fighting Irish allowed fewer than 20 points and 350 yards per game for three straight seasons, something the program last accomplished in the Lou Holtz glory days of 1987 to ’89. But Freeman’s Cincinnati defenses were just about as stout over that same 2018 to ’20 time.

Outlook: This is Kelly pulling a Saban, losing great coaching talent and replacing it with great coaching talent.

Cincinnati (13). Key staff turnover: defensive coordinator. Who’s in: Mike Tressel, former DC at Michigan State. Who’s out: Freeman, now the DC at Notre Dame. Fickell plucked this hire from the Jim Tressel family/Mark Dantonio coaching tree, grabbing Jim’s nephew and former Dantonio assistant at Michigan State. The Spartans had 99 problems in the final years under Dantonio, but defense wasn’t one.

Outlook: This should be a good fit, with Fickell having plenty of input as well.

Oregon (14). Key staff turnover: defensive coordinator. Who’s in: Tim DeRuyter, former DC at California and before that the head coach at Fresno State. Who’s out: Andy Avalos, now the head coach at Boise State. The Ducks’ defense backslid last season, although it was playing much better in the last three games of the abbreviated and delayed COVID-19 than in the first four.

Outlook: Bringing in DeRuyter from within the Pac-12 North will pay dividends in terms of league knowledge, which should aid in scouting and gameplanning.

Penn State (15). Key staff turnover: offensive coordinator. Who’s in: Mike Yurcich, who arrives from Texas and before that Oklahoma State. Who’s out: Kirk Ciarrocca, now an offensive analyst at West Virginia. Yurcich has one job: repairing the confidence of starting quarterback Sean Clifford, which seemed to take a beating in his one season under Ciarrocca. It should help the offense significantly to have running back Noah Cain back after a season-ending injury in the first game of 2020.

Outlook: It almost has to be better than last year. And it may help Clifford to know he’s not looking over his shoulder to see whether Will Levis (see below) is replacing him.

LSU (16). Key staff turnover: offensive and defensive coordinators. Who’s in: Jake Peetz at OC, Daronte Jones at DC—both arrive from NFL staffs. Who’s out: Steve Ensminger, now an offensive analyst at LSU; Bo Pelini, out of coaching. Pelini was, dollar-for-dollar, maybe the worst coordinator hire of the 21st century. The offensive side of this makeover is a greater mystery. The quarterback depth chart has been thinned by transfer (TJ Finley to Auburn) and injury (Myles Brennan), and hiring a guy who worked with Joe Brady doesn’t guarantee that you’re getting Joe Brady (much less a guarantee that Max Johnson is Joe Burrow).

Outlook: Put the OC hire in the wait-and-see category. On the defensive side, things can only go up from Bo.

Michigan (17). Key staff turnover: defensive coordinator. Who’s in: Mike Macdonald, from John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens staff. Who’s out: Don Brown, now the DC at Arizona. Harbaugh finally had enough of watching Ohio State receivers running free against Brown’s coverage schemes and made a change. Macdonald has said he prefers a defense that appears complex to an offense, with myriad looks, but is actually fairly simple. We’ll see what that means Saturday against Western Michigan.

Outlook: Brown had his strengths, and something of a cult following. But it was time for a change if Michigan wants to compete with the best of the Big Ten.

Indiana (18). Key staff turnover: defensive coordinator. Who’s in: Charlton Warren, who arrives after two years coaching defensive backs at Georgia. Who’s out: Kane Wommack, now the head coach at South Alabama. Wommack’s defense led the nation in interceptions per game last year with 17 in only eight contests played, while also excelling at hitting opposing quarterbacks. We’ll see whether Warren opts for a similar high-risk, high-reward scheme with a veteran returning unit, or picks his spots for blitzes.

Outlook: Grabbing someone from Kirby Smart’s defensive staff has been known to work well.

Kentucky (19). Key staff turnover: offensive coordinator. Who’s in: Liam Coen, who was with the Los Angeles Rams the past three years. Who’s out: Eddie Gran, who is out of coaching. Gran called a comically conservative offense, ranking 122nd nationally in passing yards per game and 113th in pass efficiency. Coen is expected to dramatically modernize the attack, but his ability to do that likely depends on quarterback Will Levis—a colorful character and dangerous runner but a limited passer in two seasons at Penn State.

Outlook: Any improvement in the UK passing game will be welcomed, but both the 35-year-old Coen and Levis have something to prove.

Missouri (20). Key staff turnover: defensive coordinator. Who’s in: Steve Wilks, who has NFL experience as a coordinator and a head coach. Who’s out: Ryan Walters, now the DC at Illinois. Walters showed his value in Illinois’s season-opening upset of Nebraska, leading a defense that tackled well and flew to the ball. Wilks certainly knows the game, but he hasn’t coached at this level since 2004. Can he keep it simple enough for college players to grasp?

Outlook: Wilks has a couple of nice pieces to build around in edge rusher Trajan Jeffcoat and defensive back Martez Manuel, but departed linebacker Nick Bolton will be missed and Mizzou must prove it can stand up to proficient running attacks.

New on Sports Illustrated: North Carolina Central Sends Message in Shifting MEAC Landscape

'College GameDay' and HBCU bragging rights were on the line in the 2021 MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

View the
original article
to see embedded media.

ATLANTA – As the final 10 seconds ticked off the clock, North Carolina Central football coach Trei Oliver dodged a celebratory Gatorade bath from three of his players.

After the final whistle blew and 0:00 lit up on the scoreboard inside Center Parc Stadium on Saturday night, Oliver and his players made their way to the end zone as the school’s marching band played and grooved to its version of Cameo’s “Talkin’ Out The Side Of Your Neck” in the bleachers.

Below the band, on the field in a huddle, Oliver—who had led his team to its first MEAC/SWAC Challenge victory in school history amid a precarious MEAC landscape—was full of excitement.

“Yessir, yessir, yessir, let’s go,” Oliver told his players as he shook their hands and doled out hugs following N.C. Central's 23-14 season-opening victory against Alcorn State.

Eagles wide receiver Noah Ellison smiled and broke out the popular “Get Griddy” dance.

The celebration was well deserved. The last time N.C. Central graced the gridiron for a game came 644 days ago, at the end of a 4-8 campaign in 2019. The Eagles entered Saturday as 15-point underdogs to Alcorn State, the 2019 SWAC champion and 2021 preseason favorite to win the SWAC West. But Oliver and his players made it clear that N.C. Central was a new team by earning the first victory against Alcorn in school history.

Prior to Saturday's showdown, fans and students from both schools—along with high school students from the Atlanta area, alums from other HBCU institutions and members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council celebrated the epitome of HBCU culture on ESPN's College GameDay.

Fans danced as the bands of both schools, joined by hip hop trio Migos, brought electrifying energy to the Atlanta streets.

The event marked not only the start to the college football season but also the beginning of a journey that starts in Atlanta with the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in August and culminates in December with the Celebration Bowl, the battle between the conference champions of the SWAC and the MEAC.

One local artist, George F. Baker III, depicted the beauty and tradition of both conferences through a majestic mural highlighting both schools and the culture of HBCU sports.

Wilton Jackson, Sports Illustrated

Baker finished the design of the mural on Wednesday and painted it the next day before adding the finishing touches on Saturday, right in the midst of the HBCU culture unfolding on the streets of Atlanta.

"It's nothing like being able to capture the culture and tradition of HBCUs," Baker said. "That was my goal for this mural, to celebrate the culture of all HBCUs."

Derek Horne, the athletic director at Alcorn State, said the big stage not only helps his school but all HBCUs across the country.

"We know we are relevant," Horne told Sports Illustrated. "It shows our relevance that we have a product that can be seen nationally and that we are worth the dollar and the investment... not only in what we do in our athletic programs but that we also shape great men and women.

"We’ve been on GMA, we’ve been on First Take, we’re on GameDay and it really means a lot."

But while Baker, Horne and fans enjoyed what felt like a homecoming experience, Oliver and his players took notice of all of the GameDay crew members—Desmond Howard, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and a guest picker in Tennessee State coach Eddie George—picking Alcorn State to win the game.

Even the Migos picked the Braves to defeat the Eagles.

However, it was N.C. Central that had the last laugh.

"Aye, tell Lee Corso and them to eat they words," said Eagles wide receiver Daeshawn Stephens after the game. "Tell Migos to eat they words! Tell everybody who chose Alcorn to eat they words, OK?"

Alcorn looked set to take control of the game in the first quarter. The Braves reached the red zone in their first two drives.

After moving the ball down field with ease in their opening drive, Braves quarterback Felix Harper—one of 18 SWAC players to be on the 2021 Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watchlist—zipped a pass to the left sideline to Juan Anthony Jr. that went for a 20-yard touchdown.

On the Braves next possession, Harper's pass to Anthony Jr. fell incomplete on third and goal, setting up a 32-yard field goal that Cristofer Thompson missed wide left. Still, despite the early success of the Alcorn State offense, the Eagles never lost faith.

"It just came down to players and coaches coming together and communicating," said N.C. Central defensive back Manny Smith after the game. "Everybody committed to the changes the coaches made."

Throughout the week, Oliver stressed to his players to keep a level mentality through the ebbs and flows of the game.

"Let's set [the thermostat] at 68 to 70 degrees," Oliver said after the game. "We aren’t going to get too high or too low. When we make a play, we aren’t going to get too excited and control your emotions. When they make a play, they have guys on scholarship, don’t tuck your head. Be levelheaded and control your emotions."

N.C. Central earned its first points on a 6-yard touchdown run by quarterback Davius Richard in the final minutes of the first half to tie the game 7-7 at halftime.

Both teams traded scoring drives in the third quarter, and Alcorn took a 14-13 lead. The Eagles used a heavy dose of running back Jorden Freeman to setup a 28-yard field goal by Adrian Olivo to claim a 16-14 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

The biggest play of the game came on the Braves' next possession. Alcorn faced third-and-28 deep in its own territory, and the Eagles kept the Braves from getting the first down. Instead, they forcing Alcorn to punt to Brandon Codrington, who returned the punt for a 77-yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 23-14.

But even with all of the miscues and missed opportunities, the Braves had one final opportunity when defensive back Keyron Kinsler Jr. picked off Richard.

The Braves started the drive at their own 44, and quarterback Felix Harper completed two passes to move his team to the Eagles' 39. However, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty cost Alcorn 15 yards and forced them to punt.

"That was a big momentum swing when we got the interception," Harper said after the game. "We have to capitalize on those kind of things... Penalties and errors messed us up... The big times we missed hurt us, and that’s it."

Oliver, although happy about his team's historic win, feels there is still a lot of work to be done.

"We played the defending SWAC champions and had 14 penalties," Oliver said. "They had five. So, there is a whole lot of stuff to work on. We gave up too many yards rushing. All I cared about was getting a win, but we will get this stuff corrected."

N.C. Central made a statement in stifling a Braves offense that averaged nearly 34 points per game while averaging 407 yards of total offense in 2019.

Conference alignment has changed the landscape of the MEAC. Bethune Cookman and Florida A&M officially began as members of the SWAC on July 1. Before the two southern Florida schools left, Hampton left the MEAC for the Big South Conference in 2018.

North Carolina A&T State—a program that has won three MEAC titles with one as a co-champion with SCSU in the last five years—also became an official member of the Big South on July 1.

The realignment moves left Delaware State, Howard, Morgan State, Norfolk State and South Carolina State in the MEAC with N.C. Central.

With some of the premier teams no longer in the MEAC, Oliver said he and his players have been motivated to prove a point to the SWAC.

More: The SWAC Is Ready for an ‘Unprecedented’ Season of College Football

Oliver, who has SWAC ties in previous coaching stops as a former defensive coordinator at Southern University and as a former outside linebackers coach, recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator at Grambling State, did not hold back about the level of football that the MEAC still has to offer.

"Why is there is so much talk about the SWAC and we have owned Atlanta for the last 14 years, I don’t get it," Oliver said. "We play good ball in the MEAC.

"I know we lost A&T, FAMU, and Bethune, but we have won championships since those last two have won. We play good football and will continue to play good football in the MEAC. At least in Durham, North Carolina, we will."

Oliver and the Eagles helped the MEAC move to a 11-4 mark against the SWAC in the interconference game.

"It feels good, but we knew this was coming," Oliver told Bridget Condon of WTVD-TV. "Tell Lee Corso: Not so fast, my friend."

Launch HN: Kalam Labs (YC S21) – Science games and live game streaming for kids
9 by KLFaraaz | 1 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN, we're Ahmad, Sashakt, and Harshit of Kalam Labs ( https://ift.tt/3j5hXgm ). Kalam Labs lets 6 to 14 year old kids learn their favourite science topics by watching live game streams and playing science games. It's like Twitch for science, except you also get to play :) Here's a sample video of our live stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGMmUg0N0HE High curiosity in kids is directly linked to better academic performance and better outcomes when they grow up. However, school leads to a drop in curiosity as they discourage asking questions and encourage “focussing on the blackboard.” Parents don’t have a solution, as internet resources are unstructured and unreliable and encyclopedias are static and boring for the kids. We were batchmates at our undergraduate degrees and worked together at India's largest educational body, NCERT. There we interacted with hundreds of kids, and they were really curious about science. Their heads were filled with questions like: Why is the sky blue? What is inside a black hole? etc. But the conventional teaching mediums were just too boring for them. So we started searching what do they want? Turns out almost every kid was on Roblox and Minecraft. There were entire communities there hanging out, hosting live streams chatting with each other. Digging deeper, we saw that Roblox and Minecraft are being extensively used as educational media. Microsoft has launched Minecraft for Education and Roblox has launched Roblox Education, and this was prompting teachers to migrate from Zoom to these multiplayer games. So we got it: we will use live game streaming to help kids learn science. We launched our MVP and saw phenomenal results. Generating $1k USD revenue in just a couple of days, we saw a market potential of scaling it and hence decided to start a startup around it. At Kalam Labs we host daily live game streams on kids' favourite science topics like space, black holes, and dinosaurs. During the live stream, an instructor takes the kids around a virtual world where they learn new topics by playing game-based exercises. The cool parts are: unlike a typical live game-stream on Twitch/YT where only the video of instructor playing a game is shared, at Kalam Labs kids can play the game with the instructor. This helps the instructor to give short fun activities for kids to solve for explaining any topic. In addition, our Live Chat has a tag-feature, which is really loved by kids. Instead of typing the entire chat, kids can just tap on the different recommendations and convey their thoughts. This leads to very high-engagement with sometimes kids liking the tapping feature more than the game itself. We are seeing cool metrics pop out due to this: Our average watch time of a live stream is 40 minutes - 5x higher than Youtube. Further, just launched in Mid-June our product has amassed thousands of paying customers growing 50% week-over-week. Please share your thoughts and feedback!

New on Sports Illustrated: Chris Mack Caught in Crosshairs of Louisville Scandal Fallout With Weighty Suspension

A six-game suspension can't be viewed in a vacuum at a program with the recent history of Cardinals men's basketball.

The University of

Louisville hit men’s basketball coach Chris Mack hard Friday, suspending him for 20 days of the 2021–22 season, a span that will include six games. That’s a pretty steep price to pay for being blackmailed.

About an hour after announcing Mack’s suspension, his former assistant, Dino Gaudio, was sentenced to one year of probation and a $10,000 fine for attempting to extort Mack. When Mack told Gaudio in March that his contract wasn’t being renewed, Gaudio threatened to go public with NCAA violations the program had committed. Mack recorded the conversation and turned it over to the Louisville administration, which spawned yet another criminal case involving the Cardinals and yet another men’s basketball NCAA infractions case. The saga, as they say, is ongoing.

The school’s stated reason for the disciplinary action is that Mack “failed to follow university guidelines, policies, and procedures in handling the matter. The sanctions imposed upon Coach Mack are unrelated to the extortion attempt itself and the ongoing NCAA process.” There is no explanation in the release of what guidelines, policies and procedures were not followed, or why. Still, it seems reasonable to conclude that this personnel action is in no small part a response to the school’s precarious NCAA compliance standing.

Scott Utterback/USA TODAY Sports

Mack is, to a degree, collateral damage as Louisville tries to find the most expedient path through the place no school wants to go: Repeat Violator Territory. The program’s most recent alleged NCAA rules violations, which Gaudio voiced to Mack in a heated meeting in Mack’s office, are relatively minor. They center on using graduate assistants in practice, and producing in-house videos for prospective recruits.

Viewed in a vacuum, that doesn’t get anyone a six-game suspension—certainly not a coach with a record previously unsullied by major NCAA violations. Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams just received a two-game suspension from the NCAA for a variety of Level II violations, among them the use of noncoaching staff members in coaching roles. What happened on Mack’s watch at Louisville appears to be similar, and wouldn’t seem to be three times more egregious than the A&M case.

Heck, Rick Pitino was given a five-game suspension from the NCAA for the strippers-in-the-basketball-dorm debacle that started Louisville’s cycle of scandal. (Pitino never served the suspension because he was fired before it could go into effect, due to the next Cardinals scandal.) For Mack to be docked six games by his own school, before this case even reaches the point of an NCAA ruling, is significant.

But none of this can be viewed in a vacuum, which is why the sins of their forefathers are coming home to roost on Mack and athletic director Vince Tyra. They weren’t around for the major infractions cases—the dorm debauchery or the arrangement via Adidas to pay Brian Bowen’s family six figures. But they have to deal with the slow-motion fallout as the wheels of NCAA justice grind on, and this latest case is a complicating factor.

Mack becomes the second Louisville men’s basketball coach to be blackmailed yet still come out of it worse for wear, following Pitino’s extortion experience at the hands of Karen Sypher, the woman he had sex with in an Italian restaurant. She went to prison; Pitino’s reputation took a hit. Gaudio on Friday avoided prison, being sentenced to one year of probation; Mack will be docked more than $200,000 in salary, in addition to the suspension.

Committing any violations while already on probation and awaiting further sanctions is, of course, extremely unwise. Louisville is pushing the envelope, for sure.

But give the Cardinals this much: Every time they screw up (which is often), they do take action—and they do it before being forced to take action. This isn’t LSU’s enabling Will Wade.

The school self-imposed a postseason ban in 2016, taking a surefire men’s NCAA tournament team out of March Madness with a month left to play in the regular season, to the shock and dismay of its fans.

The school fired Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich after the Bowen revelations surfaced in 2017, while many other programs implicated in the Southern District of New York federal investigation chose to do nothing but prepare their defenses and dare the NCAA to come get them.

And now the school has suspended Mack. At many high-major athletic programs, a threat such as Gaudio’s to expose rule-breaking would have been met with a payoff that swept everything under the rug. Not only did Louisville not opt for that, it went to the cops and turned this into a public matter.

“As I have said since the beginning of my tenure, we have high expectations for all of our staff members and coaches and we hold people accountable for their actions,” Tyra said in the school’s release announcing Mack’s suspension. “While we have made great strides over the last four years in changing the culture in our department of athletics, we cannot afford to have any setbacks, no matter how big or small, in our pursuits. I am confident that Coach Mack now understands the impact of his actions. We all have confidence in him moving forward.”

The question that has lingered over this matter: Why did Mack record the conversation with someone he has known for 30 years? So I asked. Mack’s answer: Gaudio stormed out of Mack’s office after being informed that his contract was not being renewed, then returned.

“Sensing an explosive situation was imminent, I made the decision to protect myself” by recording the subsequent discussion, Mack told me. “I wanted to make sure there was no confusion about this hostile situation.” Mack declined to answer any other questions on the matter.

The next steps at Louisville will be interesting. We don’t know where the Bowen case stands with the NCAA’s dawdling Independent Accountability Resolution Process, much less any charges that may result from the Infamous Gaudio Audio. Closure of this endless scandal cycle does not appear to be anywhere on the horizon.

But on yet another bizarre day in Louisville, one coach was sentenced for extortion, and the guy he tried to blackmail was suspended. Chris Mack’s punishment is significant, and the sins of his forefathers had to play a part in that.

New on Sports Illustrated: The SWAC Is Ready for an ‘Unprecedented’ Season of College Football

Between realignment, Deion Sanders, a team opening on ‘College GameDay’ and more, things are looking up in the league.

It’s been more than 600 days since Markquese Bell put on an orange-and-green uniform for a football game with 25,500 fans cheering him and his teammates on inside of Bragg Memorial Stadium.

In his last outing on the gridiron, Bell—a Stats Perform FCS First Team Defensive All-America at Florida A&M—was flying all around the field making plays, securing a team-high 12 tackles in a nail-biting 31–27 loss in the closing minutes of the 2019 Florida Classic against Bethune-Cookman in front of 55,730 people at Camping World Stadium.

“This is the longest I’ve been away from football,” Bell says. “It has been tough, but I’m ready to get back out there.”

The 6' 3", 205-pound defensive back was one of many Rattler players whose dream of playing the fall 2020 season—and then, in spring 2021—was cut short due to the ongoing concerns of the coronavirus pandemic. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, composed of several HBCUs, postponed fall 2020 sports to the spring and later suspended the spring 2021 football season after six of the MEAC’s football programs opted out of playing.

Several programs in the conference—Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State—still played. The MEAC allowed individual schools to do what was best for their programs and athletes while following CDC guidelines and the NCAA’s health and safety protocols.

FAMU, along with its south Florida rival, Bethune-Cookman, were among the MEAC programs that did not play. Before fall 2020, the Southwestern Athletic Conference had announced that both BCU and FAMU would become full member institutions starting July 1.

Florida A&M had been part of the MEAC for 39 years, while BCU had made its mark in the league since 1979. Like FAMU and Bethune-Cookman, Hampton—a former MEAC member—left the league for the Big South Conference in 2018, while North Carolina A&T State—a program that has won three MEAC titles with one as a co-champion with SCSU in the last five years—also became an official member of the Big South on July 1.

With the 2021 season starting—which will begin with the COVID-19 delta variant still running rampant—things will be different for players like Bell and Wildcats linebacker Untareo Johnson and tight end Taron Mallard.

Johnson says he is just ready to play football.

“Playing football again is like Christmas,” he says. “We’ve been getting ready for Christmas for two years. I am so ready to see another color jersey on a different side of the ball.”

Eric Shelton/Clarion Ledger/USA TODAY Network

Conference realignment has been a trend in the college sports landscape for nearly the last 16 years as programs have switched conferences to gain more exposure, increase recruiting, expand their pathway in TV markets and earn better chances at top spots in the polls and the College Football Playoff rankings.

The idea of forming potential super conferences with the best of the best among the Power 5 could continue to reshape college sports. In recent months and weeks,

the possibility of a 12-team expansion to the CFP has been discussed, the NCAA changed its rules to allow athletes to profit off of their name, image and likeness and what started as small rumblings during SEC media days quickly turned into Texas and Oklahoma submitting applications to join the SEC and being approved. While plenty of drama remains between the SEC and the Big 12, one thing remains constant: College football and college sports are changing.

FCS conferences and programs—particularly the SWAC—are joining the party for more exposure and in attempts to level the playing field, with much of this coming within the last year and starting with Jackson State’s hire of coach Deion Sanders.

Charles McClelland, the SWAC commissioner, says it is a good time to be in the league.

“The SWAC media brand has expanded,” McClelland told the ESPN broadcast during SWAC media days. “To bring in FAMU and BCU while celebrating 100 years is great, each week is going to be significant.

“Forty-four of the last 45 years, the SWAC has led FCS in attendance. This is going to be an unprecedented season. Others are trying to come and knock on the SWAC’s doors for our member institutions, but the one thing I want our fans to know is that the SWAC is united and strong. This is just the beginning, and the best is yet to come.”

McClelland also did not shy away about the league’s COVID-19 protocols, urging athletes and coaches to get vaccinated.

"It's quite simple; you must get vaccinated," McClelland said during media day. "If you are a vaccinated student-athlete or coach, all of the protocols have been taken off. I urge all student-athletes to get vaccinated because if you're not, you're not going to be able to finish the season based upon these protocols and there is somebody waiting to take your spot."

Per the league, players and coaches who are not vaccinated will deal with the same COVID-19 protocols from the spring season—tests for the virus three times per week and tests on game days. Individuals considered close contacts after contact tracing will face a mandatory 14-day quarantine. And teams that cancel games due to COVID-19-related roster issues will receive a forfeiture and a possible fine.

While both Florida-based schools now reside in the SWAC, they have one familiar MEAC opponent on their schedule in South Carolina State. The other games include two nonconference opponents and SWAC contests. But BCU and FAMU’s move to the conference created realignment among the league’s East and West divisions, something that will remain a storyline during the season.

Prior to their arrival, the SWAC East consisted of Jackson State, Alcorn State, Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State. With both Florida schools now in the East, Alcorn State was shifted to the SWAC West.

The Braves, who have won four of the last seven SWAC titles dating back to 2014 and are a program that has made three appearances in the five-year history of the Celebration Bowl, will play in the western division that features Southern, Grambling State, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern and the Arkansas-Pine Bluff. In its conference championship battles within the last decade, Alcorn has played three times against Southern and three times against Grambling.

However, Alcorn—which was predicted to win the SWAC West this season during media day—was the only school in the conference that decided to opt out of the spring season due to COVID-19 after winning the conference title in 2019. Taurence Wilson, a senior defensive back for the Braves, says not playing was tough but he’s excited to start the fall season to clear the elephant in the room.

“When the decision was made, it did not sit right with me,” Wilson says. “After the coaches talked to us, everything made sense but with every choice comes a consequence. We had to give up a season for us to come back better.

“Some of the teams in the division now we have played during the regular season, so, it’s kind of normal for us. We’re ready to dominate and take over the West.”

Alcorn quarterback Felix Harper, who was thrust into the starting role unexpectedly in 2019 when star Noah Johnson went down with a season-ending injury, never thought he would be a starting QB at the college level.

Harper, a redshirt senior who was taught by former quarterbacks coach and West Virginia legend Pat White, says that season was a blessing in his preparation.

“It prepared [me] for whatever is to come and I tell the quarterbacks under me to prepare as if they are the starter now,” Harper says. “Pat made me grow as a player and for that, I’m thankful.

“I’m ready to build on what we’ve established as a program. We’re hungry and as Coach McNair has told us, somebody has something we want and that’s another SWAC title.”

Despite no players landing on the league’s preseason All-SWAC teams, with the Braves’ leadership and pedigree for championship-standard football returning to the gridiron, McNair’s quest to lead his team back to another conference title starts Saturday when Alcorn meets North Carolina Central in the 2021 MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta, a game that will feature ESPN’s College GameDay.

“This is a really big deal, and it is a great experience for our program as well as the members of this conference,” McNair says.

Shedeur Sanders will be suiting up for his father, Deion, this fall.

Eric Shelton/Clarion Ledger/USA TODAY Network

Alabama A&M—the reigning champ from the spring season—knows that all eyes will be on its program in 2021. Bulldogs quarterback Aqeel Glass, the league’s preseason Player of the Year, threw for 1,084 yards and 13 touchdowns in only five games that included the SWAC championship matchup against the Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

“We have a good football team coming back,” says Bulldogs coach Connell Maynor. “We have the best quarterback in the nation, the best receivers, the best offense and a much-improved defense so we have a chance to repeat.”

The Bulldogs played only five games due to multiple COVID-19 outbreaks with their opponents during the abbreviated season. But for Glass, a potential NFL prospect for the 2022 NFL draft and one of 35 players on the watchlist for the Walter Payton Award (the nation’s top FCS player), he is not settling for one SWAC title in a Bulldogs’ uniform.

“We’ve been trying to keep everybody focused and mentally hungry and not lackadaisical,” he says. “Our season was not a fluke, and our time is now.”

In between the realignment is a Jackson State team filled with high expectations. That outlook comes with the program’s history as home of four Pro Football Hall of Famers, as well as the fact that Sanders is coaching at JSU. The Tigers finished 4–3 in the spring, earning wins over NAIA opponent Edward Waters College, Grambling, Mississippi Valley State and a forfeiture by Alcorn to secure their first winning season since 2013.

However, by Sanders’s standard—with all of the media attention, cameras, exposure and facility upgrades he has brought to the program—it was only the beginning to what he believes will be a smart, tough, fast and disciplined team that will compete for SWAC championships.

The Tigers will play eight of their 11 games this fall on ESPN’s family of networks. Sanders, who brought in the best football recruiting class among HBCUs, added several players to what was already a historic signing period for the program. However, during media days, JSU was predicted to finish third in the East behind Alabama A&M and Florida A&M with only two players—Aubrey Miller Jr. and Keonte Hampton—on the league’s preseason All-SWAC team.

“We’re the only team in the country where people expect in the first year to win,” Sanders said during media day.”

JSU will be put to the test on Labor Day weekend when the Tigers face FAMU in the Orange Blossom Classic at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Tigers quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is Deion’s son and was not eligible to play in the spring season, says he is excited for the challenge of leading the offense this season.

“We’re going against an SEC defense in practice so it’s really a blessing to have that in preparation for teams we play this year,” Shedeur says. “When you have a dad who is a Hall of Famer, he pushes me every day because he expects greatness. Regardless of who is on the schedule or the division the team plays in, we have to be prepared each week and we will.”

The journey of 12 teams, two divisions and one champion competing over the next four months at a chance to play in the Celebration Bowl—the postseason game that pits the respective champions of the SWAC and MEAC conferences—begins Saturday.

With 39 of the league’s games to be featured on ESPN’s linear and digital platforms, the growth of the conference has arrived. And for players like the Wildcats’ Mallard, it is the moment he has been waiting for.

“The person people saw in 2019 is nothing compared to who I am now,” Mallard says. “I don’t know what I am going to do when I get out there but we’re already the underdog in our own conference. Nobody is talking about BCU, but that is what makes everything so exciting, the opportunity to see who is really the best HBCU in college football.”

I'm planing on taking some serious time off to work on my side projects. I'm open to any country in the world, I want to just work on my games. So with that in mind I'll need good internet access. From what I can see, this is very doable in Eastern Europe. Eventually, I do plan on returning to the US, but I want to spend at least 6 months overseas.

New on Sports Illustrated: Big Ten, Pac-12, ACC Formally Announce Conference Alliance

The new alliance between the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 includes a "scheduling component for football and men's and women's basketball," per a conference statement.

Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch via Imagn Content Services, LLC

The Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 formally

announced an alliance Tuesday regarding matters including College Football Playoff expansion and non-conference scheduling.

The three conferences formed Tuesday's alliance in the wake of Texas and Oklahoma's move to the SEC, which is slated to go into effect in 2025. The other eight teams currently in the Big 12 have not found new homes for future years.

The alliance between the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 includes a "scheduling component for football and men's and women's basketball," per a conference statement

A target year for adjusted non-conference schedules has yet to be announced, though the three conferences reportedly "desire to see what a potential expanded CFP model looks like before adopting new scheduling strategies," according to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.

"The football scheduling alliance will feature additional attractive matchups across the three conferences while continuing to honor historic rivalries between the three leagues," the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 said in a statement. "In women's and men's basketball, the three conferences will add early and midseason games as well as annual events that feature premier matchups between the three leagues.

The Pac-12 appears to be the conference "driving" the new alliance, per ESPN. Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff said in July the conference could expand in the coming years, potentially adding Big 12 schools left behind by Texas and Oklahoma.

New top story on Hacker News: Launch HN: SafeBeat Rx (YC S21)- At-home ECG software to replace hospitalization

Launch HN: SafeBeat Rx (YC S21)- At-home ECG software to replace hospitalization
12 by rnavara | 3 comments on Hacker News.
Hey HN! We're Rachita Navara, MD and Kunj Patel, MD, MSc: co-founders of SafeBeat Rx ( https://ift.tt/3yiFA9A ). I (Rachita) am a bioengineer and cardiologist specializing in heart rhythm disorders, and Kunj is a pain physician with a Masters in applied mathematics. We make life-saving ECG software to replace a 3-day hospitalization and let patients start heart meds safely at home. 34M people have atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common heart rhythm disorder in the world. It causes 1 in 4 strokes in people over 40 and increases the risk of death by 4x. Antiarrhythmic meds improve symptoms and save lives. Unfortunately, these pills can only be started during a 3+ day hospitalization because early drug trials showed <0.6% risk of causing sudden cardiac death. This can be prevented by ECG monitoring, but there hasn't been an alternative to hospitalization since the drugs were approved 30 years ago. For low-risk patients, the risks of hospitalization outweigh the risk of medication side effects, and patients in underserved areas often don't even have access to hospitals. From a hospital/insurer perspective, each of these hospitalizations costs $17k and takes a hospital bed that would otherwise go to someone who actually needs hospital-level care. Because of unnecessary expenditures like this, AFib costs >$26B in the US alone, 75% of which is for hospitalizations. As a cardiologist specializing in heart rhythm disorders, I regularly cared for patients who were stuck in the hospital just to start these oral pills. All I was doing for these folks (as a physician with >10 years of medical training!) was making a tiny measurement on a paper ECG with physical calipers to check for drug side effects. Given my engineering background, I knew we could develop software that automates this process. I also knew, as an AFib researcher presenting at international heart rhythm conferences, that this was a large market desperate for improvement. When COVID-19 brought telehealth to the forefront, it became clear that we should build a startup to solve this. Our take-home kit combines FDA-approved wearable hardware devices with our ECG software that automates measurements, recommends drug dosing, and catches changes before they become heart attacks. Here’s a demo of our portal, which is a functional prototype that allows doctors to interact with our algorithm (and helps us get feedback on performance): https://ift.tt/3my063M... . Doctors approve our algorithm’s measurements and dosing at every step for safety. Our interface aims for simplicity, based on what we wanted ourselves while treating patients. We’ve done a 103 patient pilot study, which showed that our software successfully interpreted 100% of ECGs and could even replicate doctors’ clinical decisions. Our FDA path is short due to using existing FDA-cleared hardware, and we are seeking EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) during the pandemic. Some drugs tried on COVID-19 early in the pandemic caused people to die due to heart rhythm side effects. Our technology can prevent such deaths—not only from heart meds, but from 300+ meds that can cause sudden cardiac death, and thus require close ECG monitoring. Insurers are incentivized to reimburse our kit, and hospitals want to preserve valuable beds for sicker patients. Because heart rhythm side effects are the #1 reason drugs are declined FDA approval, we also aim to partner with pharmaceutical companies testing new drugs. Our automated system to monitor heart rhythm safety while starting drugs can tap the giant market of drug safety trials. We’re excited to share what we’ve been building and look forward to your thoughts!

New top story on Hacker News: Launch HN: Level (YC S21) – Flexible financing for early-stage lending startups

Launch HN: Level (YC S21) – Flexible financing for early-stage lending startups
15 by jetblowfish | 1 comments on Hacker News.
Hey Hacker News, We’re Vlad, Molly, and Asa from Level ( https://trylevel.app/ ). We allow lending companies to trade their loan receivables into upfront working capital that gets them off the ground and grows with them as they scale. Building a lending company is challenging because it requires a lot of capital to get started. You need lending history to access capital, but you can’t access capital until you have a history of lending. To get around this, founders traditionally raise a large dilutive equity round and then lend off their balance sheet, or they find a family office or credit fund willing to offer a loan, which usually comes with high interest rates, warrants, and covenants. Even once your company succeeds in reaching the scale necessary to secure a traditional loan, the process takes at least 3 to 6 months and costs >$100k in legal fees to set up. We didn’t think to work on this problem until it came to us. During a process of pivoting from a different business, a lot of fintechs were asking for help with raising debt from our CEO Vlad, who was a venture debt banker at Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). Vlad provided connections to traditional debt providers, but these startups were turned down because traditional debt providers don’t work with pre-seed or seed stage startups—the deals are just too small. Since a lot of these startups were showing solid progress, and were being turned down for reasons having nothing to do with how good their business was, we decided that this was a good problem to tackle. Also, companies like Pipe and Capchase turn MRR receivables into upfront capital for companies with recurring revenue. It seemed to us that the same principle could be applied to the loan receivables of lending companies, where the problem is even more painful. Our solution is to purchase loans that lending startups have originated at a discounted rate, then forward the customer’s loan payments to Level as they come in. If you are familiar with financial arrangements, it’s similar to a forward flow agreement ( https://ift.tt/3B9oAEM ). It’s different, though, in that we calculate the discount of purchasing loans by integrating directly into a company's ongoing bank balance and loan performance. This enables companies to get a lower cost of capital as they become a stronger lender and more stable business. We integrate with a startup’s banks via integrations similar to Plaid, making it possible to track the company’s cash position and burn rate. In addition, we integrate with their loan management system to watch loan performance over time. In the event of default or prepayment, the company can buy back the non-performing loan or substitute in a new one. We allow a startup to sell more loans as its loan book grows and becomes more predictable, providing a flexible alternative to costly warehouse facilities. We make money by buying loan receivables at a discount from the total value of the receivables we collect. If lending startups get better access to capital at the earliest stages, more companies will enter the market and drive competition based on the merits of the financial services they provide. This is good for existing borrowers and opens up new finance options for the underbanked and unbanked. We’re building Level so that innovative founders can responsibly scale up a lending business without traditional constraints. We’d love to hear the community’s ideas, experiences, and feedback so we can do our best on this problem. Thanks!
