Ask HN: What photo sharing solution should we use for our destination wedding?

I am getting married next week on a beach (yay!) I'd like to collect everyone's photos into a high-res shared album. 100 friends/family are joining and we are all staying at a resort for the week. They will be taking lots of great photos during the week! We will have a WhatsApp group chat. In my experience folks tend to send their photos there, but the image quality is very poor once it's uploaded to WhatsApp. My two requirements: 1. Should be very low friction for people to upload. No downloading another app. 2. Images/videos should remain in original/high quality I am willing to pay for a good solution. Does anyone have any ideas? My ideal solution would be a bot that you could add to a WhatsApp group chat. Images uploaded to the WhatsApp group chat also get automatically uploaded in their original quality to a shared google album. I don't think this is possible.

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Beta test Execute Program's interactive "Python for Programmers" course
Show HN: Beta test Execute Program's interactive "Python for Programmers" course
18 by gary_bernhardt | 4 comments on Hacker News.
I'm Gary Bernhardt, founder of Execute Program, an interactive platform for learning programming languages and other programming tools. Our "Python for Programmers" course is in a free open beta for the next week or so. We don't normally do open betas, but the infrastructure behind this course is new and very complex, so we want to stress test it. https://ift.tt/ZBiOCqJ... Today, "Python for Programmers" contains 581 interactive code examples covering the core language. It's aimed at established programmers, not beginners. We don't explain basic language features like `while`, but we do show them briefly and note anything special about how they work in Python. We pay special attention to foot guns. For example, we have an entire lesson about Python's mutable default argument foot gun. This is the first of two courses, with the second coming in 2024. For this course, we drew the line at __dunder__ methods: if a topic requires a dunder method other than `__init__`, then it'll be in the follow-up course. This beta is concurrent with the tail end of our editing process, so you may see the course grow by another 17 lessons (214 code examples) during the beta. Some details about how the course works internally, and why we need a beta at all: First, all Python code in the course runs in your browser via Pyodide. (Reality continues to look more and more like my PyCon 2014 talk [1].) You'll feel a pause when the first code example runs, as your browser loads and boots CPython (around 12 MB). After that, it should be as responsive as a local app. Second, if you look at the course page, you'll see that it's structured as a DAG, similar to a "tech tree" in Civilization, Age of Empires, Stellaris, Satisfactory, etc. (Some of those games have true trees, but some of their "trees" are actually DAGs like ours.) You make progress through the course by traversing one graph edge at a time. Our courses have always been structured as graphs internally, but the raw graphs are simply unreadable due to the number of edges [2]. This year, I taught Execute Program to simplify its own course graphs by breaking them into the level subgraphs that you see on the page, so we can finally render them. It automatically turns the mess that I linked above into the clean graphs that you see in the course. The graph for this course is currently a bit dull, but it'll fill out as we finish editing the remaining lessons. I like Everyday TypeScript's graph [3] the best. Please try the course and use the "Give Feedback" entry in the menu to tell us what you think! I'll also stick around in this thread today. [1] https://ift.tt/IHa5zJ3... [2] https://ift.tt/qChxkbV... New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: ScratchDB – Open-Source Snowflake on ClickHouse
Show HN: ScratchDB – Open-Source Snowflake on ClickHouse

Hello! For the past year I’ve been working on a fully-managed data warehouse built on Clickhouse. I built this because I was frustrated with how much work was required to run an OLAP database in prod: re-writing my app to do batch inserts, managing clusters and needing to look up special CREATE TABLE syntax every time I made a change. I found pricing for other warehouses confusing (what is a “credit” exactly?) and worried about getting capacity-planning wrong. I was previously building accounting software for firms with millions of transactions. I desperately needed to move from Postgres to an OLAP database but didn’t know where to start. I eventually built abstractions around Clickhouse: My application code called an insert() function but in the background I had to stand up Kafka for streaming, bulk loading, DB drivers, Clickhouse configs, and manage schema changes. This was all a big distraction when all I wanted was to save data and get it back. So I decided to build a better developer experience around it: see https://ift.tt/YKtG7AD and https://ift.tt/fjoXmHB . It's called “ScratchDB” because the idea is to make it easy to get started from scratch. It’s a massively simpler abstraction on top of Clickhouse. ScratchDB provides two endpoints [1]: one to insert data and another to query. When you send any JSON, it automatically creates tables and columns based on the structure [2]. Because table creation is automated, you can just start sending data and the system will just work [3]. It also means you can use Scratch as any webhook destination without prior setup [4,5]. When you query, just pass SQL as a query param and it returns JSON. It handles streaming and bulk loading data. When data is inserted, I append it to a file on disk, which is then bulk loaded into Clickhouse. The overall goal is for the platform to automatically handle managing shards and replicas. The whole thing runs on regular servers. Hetzner has become our cloud of choice, along with Backblaze B2 and SQS. It is written in Go. From an architecture perspective I try to keep things simple - want folks to make economical use of their servers. The software is open-source and the paid offering is a hosted version. So far ScratchDB has ingested about 2 TB of data and 4,000 requests/second on about $100 worth of monthly server costs. Feel free to download it and play around - if you’re interested in this stuff then I’d love to chat! Really looking for feedback on what is hard about analytical databases and what would make the developer experience easier! Ok, first let me classify companies that offer these services. Tier1: Twilio, Plivio, MessgBird, Vonage, Amazon SNS Tier 2: Alternatives for these Tier 3: More Alternatives, but geo based and also focussed on bulk SMS as primary offering Now, ì do not want to get into Tier 2 also as the API approach ad DX is not available compared to how it is with Tier1. Also I don’t want to risk my customers phone numbers with providers who do not have good support and privacy handling features. There are couple or more apps that I am building where I like the simplicity of SMS. I don’t have to request for push notification permissions, I do not need an app on the stores to push relevant info and updates. Most basic User signup. If user does not want to use the phone, then maybe the service is not for them. And then occasional updates on Direct messages on the platform. (Order completion, delivery instructions, Direct Messages from users etc.) I see most of these as small messages only if they ever did take actions on the platform. However, based on my initial calculations, even with 1000 users signing up. Allowing SMS code input and DM messages or info messages, these can reach a number of close to 300 to 500 Euros or Dollars monthly. This is including alpa numeric sending options. Where I do not allow messages to be replied back. When I started programming SMS was the cheapest option. Now I feel it has become expensive However I still see small and big companies using these options. 1. Are there other alternatives I am not seeing? 2. Since my volume of push and sending is low, I do not want to ask users push notification and scare them away 3. What other options can we see here.

Show HN: I rewrote the 1990's LambdaMOO server from scratch

I got my start on the Internet in the very early 90s playing with, authoring in, and programming on LambdaMOO ( https://ift.tt/Y9WpUZP ) and similar systems. Shared virtual social spaces, with a persistent object oriented authoring / scripting language. They can be classified as MUDs (depending on who you talk to) but the focus is social, creative / authoring, and shared programming not RPG gaming. I've always wanted to see this kind of thing modernized and further developed. Over the last 25 years or so I've worked on similar but novel & improved things, but never finished. So I decided to just re-implement LambdaMOO and use that as a base, instead and keep compatibility as a goal, but build it out on a more modern foundation that takes advantage of multiple core machines, newer network protocols, newer connectivity methods, uses MVCC transactions for the shared database etc. LambdaMOO is a somewhat extensive system in that it is composed of compiler, a virtual machine, an object database, user permissions system, network runtime. In some ways it's kind of like a shared, text-based Smalltalk image/runtime... So quite a bit to implement and get right before it all works together. The big challenge throughout has been slavishly maintaining backwards compatibility so existing "cores" (databases) work. It's not done, but it's darn close. Would like for people who are into this kind of thing to check it out, and maybe even help. Many of the technical aspects here are still provisional, but this is the start. Constructive assistance welcome. (Yes, it's a rewrite in Rust, but that's not really the point, even though that's a cliche that's fun.)

New top story on Hacker News: Fine-tune your own Llama 2 to replace GPT-3.5/4
Fine-tune your own Llama 2 to replace GPT-3.5/4
49 by kcorbitt | 12 comments on Hacker News.
There has been a lot of interest on HN in fine-tuning open-source LLMs recently (eg. Anyscale's post at https://ift.tt/j6qiOvG ). I've been playing around with fine-tuning models for a couple of years, and wanted to share some insights and practical code. I’ve condensed what I’ve learned into a small set of notebooks at https://ift.tt/gOwdqAZ... , covering labeling data, fine-tuning, running efficient inference, and evaluating costs/performance. The 7B model we train here matches GPT-4’s labels 95% of the time on the test set, and for the 5% of cases where they disagree it’s often because the correct answer is genuinely ambiguous. What is fine-tuning? You can think of it as a more-powerful form of prompting, where instead of writing your instructions in text you actually encode them in the weights of the model itself. You do this by training an existing model on example input/output pairs that demonstrate the task you want your fine-tuned model to learn. Fine-tuning can work with as few as 50 examples but I usually try to get 1000+ if possible. Prompting still has some big advantages over fine-tuning. It's way easier/faster to iterate on your instructions than label data and re-train a model. And operationally it's easier to deploy one big model and just adjust its behavior as necessary vs deploying many small fine-tuned models that will likely each get lower utilization. Fine-tuning has one huge advantage though: it is far more effective at guiding a model's behavior than prompting, so you can often get away with a much smaller model. That gets you faster responses and lower inference costs. A fine-tuned Llama 7B model is 50x cheaper than GPT-3.5 on a per-token basis, and for many use cases can produce results that are as good or better! For example, classifying the 2M recipes at https://ift.tt/VE6GRXr with GPT-4 would cost $23k. Even with GPT-3.5 it would cost over $1k. The model we fine-tuned performs similarly to GPT-4 and costs just $19 to run over the entire dataset. Disclaimer: My brother David and I are working on an open-source product called OpenPipe ( https://ift.tt/ALbaiJx ) to help engineers adopt fine-tuning as simply as possible. But none of the information above depends on our startup. The current post is just about sharing information that we’ve learned about fine-tuning. I hope it’s useful!

Ask HN: In person industry tours and site visits

The head master of my primary school took a small group of students every semester on industry site visits. I believe these site visits played a meaningful role in developing my engineering and entrepreneurial interests/thinking. Although I only vaguely remember the details, I do have a strong lasting impression of the locations/factories we visited and people we met. I got to see a plastic pipe molding facility, coke cola bottling factory, first wind power turbines in Cape Town area and assembled a door alarm prototype at the neighboring university. This was all before the age of 13. In university I had similar practical exposure doing an internship at a boiler manufacturing factory, chicken processing plant and finally a tech startup. I truly cherish these experiences and glimpses into the real world. Obviously I knew very little of what was really going on, but these experiences helped me build a sort-of mental map to unpack my options at the time. Do you think practical site visits as a teenager is a good idea? Have you had similar exposure and did it have a lasting impact on you too? Do you think we need to create more opportunities like this for students?

Hi HN community, I have been working on benchmarking publicly available LLMs these past couple of weeks. More precisely, I am interested on the finetuning piece since a lot of businesses are starting to entertain the idea of self-hosting LLMs trained on their proprietary data rather than relying on third party APIs. To this point, I am tracking the following 4 pillars of evaluation that businesses are typically look into: - Performance - Time to train an LLM - Cost to train an LLM - Inference (throughput / latency / cost per token) For each LLM, my aim is to benchmark them for popular tasks, i.e., classification and summarization. Moreover, I would like to compare them against each other. So far, I have benchmarked Flan-T5-Large, Falcon-7B and RedPajama and have found them to be very efficient in low-data situations, i.e., when there are very few annotated samples. Llama2-7B/13B and Writer’s Palmyra are in the pipeline. But there’s so many LLMs out there! In case this work interests you, would be great to join forces. GitHub repo attached — feedback is always welcome :) Happy hacking!

Howdy! RSSfeedASAP scratches my own itch. I run a regional podcasting directory which gets dozens of messy submission for podcasts. Often they don't even include an xml file and me being a good samaritan I sometimes do the manual work and find it myself. I got tired of that manual work and decided to build a microapp. RSSfeedASAP is this app and I decided to release it in case someone else finds any use in it.
