New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: DOOM in the kernel, or fibers in eBPF

Show HN: DOOM in the kernel, or fibers in eBPF
6 by ayles | 2 comments on Hacker News.
Some time ago my coworker who was working on first version of Perforator ( https://ift.tt/B7Q8I5J ) kept talking about eBPF, so I got curious about its ISA and restrictions. That was around the time I read about DOOM on pregnancy test, so I thought: "what if someone run DOOM inside of Linux kernel in eBPF? Surely, with some restrictions, this should still be possible?" I started to play around with it somewhere in 2024 - first stripping DOOM to bare minimum that is needed for showcase, simplifying code and trying to pass first restrictions that I encountered - function limit, recursion, memory access and checks. I tried to do this by hand, but it was, well, tedious labor. So I changed direction and instead started to do some of the things with LLVM-passes - rewriting memory access, simplifying and rewriting loops etc. But there were just so many corners. And given absence of time and all, I forgot about this project. But couple months ago I thought: "LLMs are quite good nowadays, so why not try again this time with more hands". I tried different approaches on how memory access could be "virtualized", how loops can be made bounded, and in general - how to run unbounded logic on such a machine. When I got DOOM running, I got carried away. Approach was so "generic", so it would be a crime not to try to run more things. And now we have it - lua running on xdp hot path, llama2 working with softfloats, and even cpython, that did not fit initially into 1M verifier budget, is running there now thanks to freplace. There is ton of work to do in order to make programs run faster, to make integration easier, but working examples are already there.

Show HN: TERMy – A fast terminal assistant that does not use LLMs
1 by gioscarab | 0 comments on Hacker News.
I love research and development, you may have heard of me because of PJON (Padded Jittering Operative Network). It is a network protocol I started developing in 2010, which was recently implemented in silicon by the ETH Zurich university thanks to the research of Pius Sieber. I am excited to share with you TERMy, a terminal assistant built on top of the NPC-Forge framework. Unlike everything else being built today, TERMy does not use embeddings, machine-learning or LLMs. It runs on the CPU (even on a Raspberry Pi Zero) both in the terminal or client-side in a browser tab and responds in milliseconds. It is a cynical but very knowledgeable Linux terminal assistant that translates your natural language into shell commands without relying on a single artificial neuron. I had a chance to focus for 2 months on my personal projects since early July, during the strange times of AI price hikes and the end of subsidized tokenmaxing. I was curious to see if I could develop from scratch a terminal assistant capable of handling simple natural language requests. I have a bad memory and got used to ask to copilot "activate the virtual environment" or similar trivial operations spending a non negligible sum every month. I started thinking, maybe I can do something to make my workflow more efficient? Do I really need trillions of parameters to accomplish those tasks? How it Works When you type a prompt, it goes through a lightweight NLU pipeline written in ~1000 lines of Python that implement the following steps: 1. Strip expletives, interjections, encouraging, discouraging and thanking words (remove noise) 2. Sentiment analysis 3. Exact Match (very fast) 4. Template Match (slower) 5. Probabilistic Match (even slower) Step 5 relies on: 1. IDF (Inverse Document Frequency) to identify rare words. 2. BOW (Bag Of Words) to accommodate word inversions. 3. IDF weighted Levenshtein to safely handle typos. Permission gating is hardcoded into the dataset and enforced for all potentially destructive commands, so it's inherently safer than letting an unpredictable LLM run wild on your machine. - TERMy in operation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeIp0xePLBg - Variance and typo tolerance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQvGDk6fkk0 - Copilot integration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzzouhq2a8A - Advanced features: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeIp0xePLBg - Source Code: https://ift.tt/bMvQfV3

I'm Sam, I make sample libraries (as FrozenPlain). These sample libraries run inside Floe, my audio plugin for Linux, macOS and Windows. It's designed for musicians, composers and producers - typically people involved with film/TV/game scoring or ambient music. I open-sourced it primarily because I'm very fond of this philosophy and I want to open the door for serving a wider audience than just my own libraries. It's totally free, no sign-ups. You'll need a DAW. To try it: - Download and install Floe: https://floe.audio - Download your choice of free packages: https:floe.audio/packages#community-packages or https://ift.tt/dRWwjDN - Install the packages using Floe's 'Install Package' button. https://ift.tt/swlWTxX I'm curious about HN's thoughts regarding the open-source nature, directions I could take for expanding the audience, and the Lua based sample-library it has ( https://ift.tt/wGcOD0Y ). Thanks.

Show HN: OJCP – an open protocol for agent-consumable job data
12 by fraywing | 2 comments on Hacker News.
Author here! Agents are applying to jobs for people right now, with progressively more volume, and there's nothing built for it. So they scrape career pages and fight ATS forms with Playwright/Browser Use, which breaks constantly (or they get bot blocked). Employers get buried in applications that don't fit, candidates hear nothing back, and the resume is now an AI-written thing that another AI scores (which breaks the existing model entirely, btw). OJCP is MCP tools for search and apply, a manifest at /.well-known/ojcp.json so agents can find providers, and schemas that extend schema.org instead of replacing it. The playground on the site is a live MCP endpoint, so you can throw calls at it right now. Why a spec at all when models keep getting better at figuring things out? Inference can't produce authorization. An agent can work out what a form wants. It can't establish that someone consented to this specific submission, and then employer has no way to verify who's calling. So TL;DR a more capable agent is also a more capable impersonator. In this model, trust runs both direction. Agents sign requests using the same method that CloudFlare and OpenAI are already using, providers sign their manifests, agents can check against a JWKS, and trust tiers cap how much candidate PII can go to a given provider. Validation happens at consent, so browsing costs nothing and you only pay the verify when the interaction occurs. I'm the CTO of Recruitics (job advertising) and spent time at LinkedIn before that, so I've been at the intersection of hiring and job search for a while and have felt the pain of both sides. Happy to answer any questions!

Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32s
17 by section33 | 3 comments on Hacker News.
I might be the only SRE on Earth with his own bowling center. It's a more in-depth gig than you'd think. My family and I bought an abandoned 8-lane bowling center in the rural mid-west. In our small town there weren't many recreation options for families. You've heard of a food desert? This is an R&R desert. It had been abandoned for a good reason. The roof leaks, the electrical system was constantly surging, and my 70-year-old bowling equipment (still) doesn't work perfectly. The system that keeps your score is particularly interesting to me. It's the thing you watch during your game, but it fades into the background beyond that. Turns out these things are really cool, but absurdly expensive. Ours was installed in 2008 and cost six figures. It's calculating ball speed and trajectory, camera-based pin detection (object detection and trig, on ICs!), runs the fouling, the animations, the pinsetting machine and ball return. Very cool stuff for its age. From the business perspective, my facility only cost me $105k. To forklift-replace the score keeping system runs anywhere between $80-$120k, depending on features, vendor, and unit age. No upgrades or service contracts, mind you, and every feature and customization is a new line item. That's for a 1:1 replacement on a system installed in 2008. Incredible, given how fast the tech world moves. Replacement parts cost a shocking $4000 per pair of lanes. But wait, the bowling machines themselves are 70 years old, so what's this "advanced" system actually doing back there? Actuating a single relay to trigger that big old machine. Everything else is strictly mechanical. Meanwhile I've got a six-figure invoice in my hand. I'm upset. Given the state of open hardware, computer vision, real-time event streaming, and open source running megascale products worldwide, there had to be a way to do this myself. So far I've built an equivalent prototype for about $200 per lane-pair, $400 if you're fancy. ESP32 and ESPNow with an RS485 fallback, reporting to a raspberry pi lane computer that's really just redis and a state machine bolted to an ESP32 gateway for the mesh. Since it's all ESP32, I've got a fistful of spare controllers in a drawer, pre-flashed or waiting to be. All common off-the-shelf hardware: microcontrollers wired to relays, optocouplers, and IR-break-beam sensors, each running slightly different firmware. Writing the firmware and protocol is the actual hard part. It's an ESPNow star-topology mesh: each node emits events from its sensors and accepts commands for its controls, reporting to a gateway node connected to the raspi over UART. From there it's event streaming: RX packets get translated and tossed into redis, commands relay back out to the mesh as needed. RS485 sits underneath as a wired fallback for noisy RF environments. Once the data's in redis, it's familiar middleware/React/websocket/pub-sub stuff. Any React dev can build their own UI and bowling animations. Since it all runs on commodity hardware, I can do legit anything I want as the proprietor, and I own all my data. Repairs take five minutes; I can swap the rig on a lane pair in under 10. I'd bet a house like mine could go from zero to running in an hour or two. We're calling it OpenLaneLink, and I plan to open source the hardware, firmware, and software stack when it's ready. Bowling is fun, and I want to help keep it affordable for alleys like mine. I hate vendor lock-in. I'm not a fan of closed systems, calling support for every hiccup, or paying to "white label" my own equipment. Want to go Tron-themed for a night? Good luck finding a neon neumorphic theme in something bought at the turn of the century. All that bugged me. Sure, bowling equipment is niche, but the open hardware and software landscape is amazing. Thanks for reading! Let me know if anyone's interested in more posts about this bowling nonsense.

A few years ago I made a pen plotter attachment for Prusa MK4 ( https://ift.tt/jpZ1G95... ) and at the time I didn't have a good way to turn artwork into G-code for it, and I put the project on ice for a while. I recently wanted to dabble in line art again and made a small browser app to make it easier. As agentic AI tools of 2026 are quite addictive, it rather quickly grew into something quite a bit more - an integrated browser CAD/CAM for pen plotters that covers everything from importing existing artwork, creating artwork from scratch, preparing for plotting and hardware integration. It includes some off-beat features like a Logo interpreter for turtle art and Graves RNN for handwriting synthesis and in addition to 3D printer pretending to be pen plotters it now also supports actual pen plotters based on EBB (AxiDraw) and GRBL firmwares through Web Serial. If you own an AxiDraw or a GRBL plotter, I'd very much appreciate it you gave it a try and give feedback. As I don't own those, I did all the testing with a hardware mock on STM32, so I am not sure how well it works attached to an actual plotter. New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Reviving my 2001 college band with AI

Show HN: Reviving my 2001 college band with AI
24 by jacobgraf | 12 comments on Hacker News.
25 years ago, I joined a band called Fading Maize at Ripon College in Wisconsin. We did what we could with what we had. We recorded 3 albums over the next 3 years and played at as many bars and coffee shops as we could. We built a website with Microsoft Frontpage. Then we went our separate ways, got married, had kids, focused on other things. Earlier this year I had the idea to approach the lead singer who wrote all of the lyrics and melodies to the stuff we played back then, and wanted to "reimagine" everything in 2026 using AI. That's the project I want to share here! The site has a before/after player where you can flip between the original dorm-room recording and the 2026 version mid-song without losing your place, so you can hear exactly what changed. The original 2001 website is preserved and browsable at https://ift.tt/L7UMZmg , rough edges intact. Working on this, the thing that sparked in my own mind is that it was an experiment in a certain way to use AI. The songs, lyrics, and arrangements are the original human work (in this case from 2001-2003). We wrote the lyrics, we created the melodies, we played the parts, it just didn't sound as good as we heard it in our own heads. The stuff AI creates is awesome, but it means less if it's just the AI cranking everything out from the ground up. In our case, the AI was only there to help us get the results we originally wanted back in 2001 when we were cooking ramen in our dorm rooms and couldn't afford anything fancy Being fully transparent about our use of AI, sticking tightly to our original lyrics and melodies, but making full use of AI to give us the studio, session players, and production budget we never had seemed like the right balance of concerns. I'm super proud of how it turned out and the transparency we've used along the way. Happy to discuss the audio pipeline, the site (Next.js), or what it's like to A/B your 20-year-old self! p.s. New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: I mapped 8.5M research papers into an interactive atlas

Show HN: I mapped 8.5M research papers into an interactive atlas
9 by leonickson | 0 comments on Hacker News.
When I read papers, I have to jump between multiple tabs to find the dataset, code, videos, peer reviews, and so on. I tried to fix this with this project. It started as a project just for papers on arXiv, but after its initial success on Twitter (got like 1.9k views: the most I have gotten for a post), I have now expanded it to include other openly available papers from PubMed Central, bioRxiv, medRxiv, and eLife. These papers have been linked with their genes, proteins, diseases, drugs, clinical trials, 3D protein structures, code, and cited and similar papers. This project now has four parts: First, a map. I embedded nearly 8.5M papers (with SPECTER2), ran UMAP for 2D representation, and rendered them as a scatterplot. The dots can be clicked to see brief information about the papers, like an LLM TLDR, key findings, peer reviews, linked entities, and more. The clusters are also labeled, though you might have to zoom in. Second, I built a detailed paper page for each paper. They give you the paper's full text, images, videos, peer reviews (from OpenReview), GitHub links, Hugging Face dataset/model links, clinical trials, genes, diseases, 3D protein structures, cited papers, and similar papers. You can also copy the whole page, including the full paper text and image URLs, as markdown for your LLM. Third, I have released an extension so you can read all this information in your sidebar by clicking "open in Tomesphere" that shows up in arXiv, PMC, bioRxiv, Google Scholar, or medRxiv. I have tried to provide as much information as possible in the extension, though for things like viewing all the images or a 3D protein structure, you might still have to go to the paper page using the link provided in the extension. Fourth, all this data is available for your LLM via MCP. The MCP does have a 50-query free limit (this jumps 10x with signup). Note: this project is still in beta, so papers might have some mismatched information. I am rolling out feedback forms soon to improve the data quality. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Selector Forge – browser extension for AI-generated resilient selectors

Show HN: Selector Forge – browser extension for AI-generated resilient selectors
16 by ahmadilaiwi | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN, I'm Ahmad from the Intuned ( https://intunedhq.com ) team. Today, we're releasing and open-sourcing Selector Forge ( https://ift.tt/hHMZFrs ), a browser extension that generates reliable CSS/XPath selectors using AI. You can use it to create a selector for a single element or for an array of elements. The selectors it creates are meant to be "semantic" and more resilient to page changes than what Chrome DevTool’s “Copy Selector” (and other similar extensions) give you. Those tend to hand you something brittle like `#top > div.w-100.ph0-l.ph3.ph4-m > h1 > span`, which can break with a minimal page change. Selector Forge aims for selectors that don't break as easily. Here are some selectors that Selector Forge created: `//div[@aria-label="Showing weekly downloads"]//p[@aria-live="polite"]` (item selector) and `//*[local-name()='svg' and @aria-label="Download statistics"]/following-sibling::div` (list selector). Here is a video demo of using the extension: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IjjeDQkKmo Selector Forge on Chrome: https://ift.tt/xLvzN89... Selector Forge on Firefox: https://ift.tt/jfY5wGB... Selector Forge code: https://ift.tt/W3SFlUh Backstory: For the past couple of years we've been building Intuned Agent, a coding agent for building and maintaining browser automations. We quickly figured out that the most fragile part of any browser code is usually the selectors and that creating good selectors can go a long way towards improving the quality and reliability of the automation itself. So we abstracted selector creation into its own agent, wrapped it as a tool, and let our codegen agent call it. LLMs by default don't do a great job generating good selectors, so this turned out to be really useful and improved the code our agent generates. We recently thought that this piece (the selector agent/creation) is useful on its own (outside our platform) so we packaged it as a browser extension. That’s this post! Selector Forge is open source, and the version in the browser stores (Chrome and Firefox) is free for up to 200 selectors/month. Unlimited usage is part of our paid plans. We realize most developers aren't writing this kind of code by hand anymore, so the next step is exposing this functionality in a way coding agents can call directly, over a CLI or MCP. Here's our roadmap: https://ift.tt/qEyNrxX Excited to hear your thoughts, questions, and feedback!

I've been building StartupWiki, a free startup database designed to make it easier to discover and research companies. The original motivation was frustration with how difficult it can be to find information on early-stage startups. Most databases need accounts, or subscriptions, ro just feel too cluttered. I wanted a website that felt like Wikipedia, no accounts, no subscriptions, no weird metrics, just go in, the info is on the page. The project is still very early, but currently includes: Startup profiles Search and filtering Company categorization Public API (in progress) I'm especially interested in feedback on: What information you look for when researching startups Features missing from existing startup databases API use cases I'd love to hear feedback.

Show HN: Pagecast – Publish Markdown/HTML Reports to Cloudflare Pages
4 by amaldavid | 0 comments on Hacker News.
I built this because I kept generating HTML/Markdown reports from Claude Code/Codex and needed a permanent share link instead of a localhost tunnel. Pagecast is a local CLI that publishes those files to your own Cloudflare Pages account. It supports Markdown and HTML, stable URLs, renaming, republishing to the same URL, and watch mode for continuous updates to same file. It is MIT licensed. The main design choice is that there is no hosted Pagecast account. It uses your Cloudflare account and deploys there directly and has claude code and codex integrations as skill/hooks. Basically it can be used as a replacement for codex sites or claude artifacts

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Mochi.js: bun-native high-fidelity browser automation library

Show HN: Mochi.js: bun-native high-fidelity browser automation library
11 by ccheshirecat | 4 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN, I’m sharing mochi.js ( https://ift.tt/vuKhBVZ ), a Bun-native, raw-CDP browser automation framework. It's designed to make programmatic browser use more effective by focusing on consistency and measured parity with regular traffic, purely from the JS layer, against stock Chromium. The most common forms of browser automation focus heavily on client-side line by line probes, which are mostly cosmetic. This makes people feel better but it doesn't have much relevance to actual WAF or anti-automation defences. Mochi.js focuses on what actually matters, allowing you to get past captchas, WAF's and most defence mechanisms. In fact, in some cases it actually outperforms chromium forks simply by virtue of not having to lie. The foundation is built on a probe manifest based on analyzing several WAF's and trying to cover most of the ground that matters, and from there building upwards while ensuring every decision is backed by data. Solves turnstile/interstitial automatically, single digit fpjs suspect score, very good client-side results, though browserscan and a few others are known limitations that are fundamentally conflicting with what WAF's probe for. I'll be here if anyone wants to discuss the details, check out the docs and github. It's completely free and open source, MIT, strictly no relationship to any proprietary products whatsoever. No affiliation to patched chromium forks, or SaaS. But I also want to talk about why I built this, because the current paradigm of "bot detection" is fundamentally broken. Traditionally they would probably try to label my repository a malicious tool, or at best, a grey hat one. Let's take Turnstile for example, If you attach a debugger to see what data they are extracting from your hardware, their script intentionally self-destructs. When they try to extract your data—acting as a guest on your silicon, using your electricity, without asking, the industry calls it "Security." But if you write a script to control exactly what data your own hardware emits, refusing to provide the data they have no right to ask for, you are suddenly labeled a "Malicious Actor" engaged in "Bot Evasion." I find it absurd we let ourselves put up with this, and the stance of the bot-evasion community only makes them feel more able to take a higher moral ground. I have built a library that respects my hardware's reality. If that breaks your security model, that's because your security model relies on trespassing and secrecy. I stopped apologizing. Who's next? Mochi is the exact opposite of WAF opacity. It is a glass box. It is MIT-licensed. The entire DAG, fingerprint manifest schema, harvesting process, is documented. We even commit our live benchmarks to the public record (mochi on a Linux datacenter IP scored a suspect_score: 8 and bot: not_detected against FingerprintJS Pro v4). We don't even lie unnecessarily. We default to host-OS matching. If you run mochi on a Linux server, it uses privacy-sensible fingerprints for Linux, not Windows, because Linux is a real-user signal. It proves that WAFs aren't actually blocking what most people think they are, which begs the question of what they are really doing in that obfuscated payload. The legitimacy argument is exactly how they captured the narrative. And nobody challenged it because the people on the other side were too busy acting like they were doing something wrong. Is this a conspiracy theory? For sure, but only because they allow it to be. Try make a conspiracy theory about the sticky riceball.

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: I built a RISC-V emulator that runs DOOM

Show HN: I built a RISC-V emulator that runs DOOM
15 by Flex247A | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5uygzEmdLw Hi HN, I built a RISC-V emulator that implements the RV32IM instruction set and a minimal syscall interface to run DOOM. A few weeks ago, I got my first output with a simple hello world assembly program. Since then I have been working tirelessly to get DOOM to run. I needed to figure out how to run C programs first, and came across newlib, which allows the underlying environment to implement the syscall stubs one by one until the programs run. I have also added ELF loading, but currently only a single `PT_LOAD` segment is supported. To port DOOM, I used doomgeneric, which was quite convenient to get working once the required stubs were in place. DOOM renders to a fixed area in memory (0x705FDD = VRAM_START): 0x7FFFFF +-------------------------------------+ | | | QUEUE_SIZE (32 bytes) | | | 0x7FFFDF +-------------------------------------+ <-- QUEUE_START 0x7FFFDE | QUEUE_READ_IDX | 0x7FFFDD | QUEUE_WRITE_IDX | +-------------------------------------+ | | | | | VRAM (1,024,000 bytes) | | | | | 0x705FDD +-------------------------------------+ <-- STACK_START | Stack | | | | | v | | | | ^ | | | | | Program data + Heap | | | 0x000000 +-------------------------------------+ I made a small linker script so that the entry point of a C program is at _start and virtual address is always 0. That kept the ELF loader code simple. Inputs are written to the queue by rvcore which are then intercepted by DOOM running inside it.
